Supports

Personalised Supports

The Space Newcastle aims to be a provider of the highest quality support. This means offering flexible, personalised supports on our participants’ terms, supported by people with the skills and experience required to excel. This also means we aim to recognise when we are not the best fit for support, and helping direct our participants to services that better fit their needs.

You can view support information under these five key headings:

Technology & Learning  |  Employment  |  In-Home & Daily Routine  |  Social  |  Health & Lifestyle

Technology & Learning

The Space Newcastle is proud to have former high school teachers, qualified trainers and I.T. professionals among it’s staff. We combine this unique staff mix with our cutting edge technology to offer what we believe is the best technology and learning support available in Newcastle. Supports we offer include:

  • Tutoring in technology related subjects.
  • Learn to build, maintain and repair computers and devices.
  • Support learning to use technology devices, such as computers, mobile devices, recording equipment, digital audio workspaces, graphic design tools and much more.
  • Support learning to make games, produce and record music, build websites and apps, how to create animations, 2D and 3D graphcis, and much more.
  • Support creating and maintaining YouTube channels and Twitch Feeds.
  • Support studying through TAFE online as part of a supported group, offering an alternative to the TAFE environment.

Employment

The Space Newcastle’s employment related supports are coordinated by Jonathon who has years of experience working as a disability employment coordinator with other organisations. We recognise that our organisation is best suited to employment support for people with an interest in technology and music related industries, and we will refer people to other services for employment support outside of our scope. Supports we offer include:

  • Support developing employment pathway plans.
  • Support identifying gaps in learning, skills and qualification, and support accessing and completing training and study.
  • Support developing resumes and cover letters, and applying for work in person and online.
  • Support navigating Centrelink, the NDIS and employment forms.

The Space Newcastle also runs a small IT repairs and services business where participants can gain work experience and work on employment skills.

In-Home & Daily Routine

The Space Newcastle has experienced support staff who have years of experience working for disability services in Newcastle assisting people in their home and in their daily routines. We believe our staff are uniquely suited to act as supporters and as role models for the people they support, being able to engage on a peer level through shared interests. We recognise that we do not bring experience in complex support needs and as such will refer people to more suitable services where appropriate. Supports we offer include:

  • Support learning to navigate public transport networks, and develop travel routines.
  • Support with daily self care and hygiene routines.
  • Support learning to contribute more at home with tasks such as cooking and cleaning.
  • Support with budgeting and with navigating centrelink, the NDIS and other organisations.

Social

By making our support environment technology focused we hope to offer a place where participants are constantly around people with shared interests. It is our aim to use these shared interests to help build lasting and meaningful friendships and connections. To achieve this we provide regular scheduled social activities and are always looking to identify events of interest for our participants. Supports we offer include:

  • One on One support to attend events of interest and social spaces.
  • Weekly social gaming groups.
  • Support to attend events as part of a group.
  • Social calendars which list upcoming events where staff and participants can attend supported or unsupported.

Health & Lifestyle

Our Health & Lifestyle supports are coordinated by Shaun who holds a Diploma of Sport and Fitness, as well as years of experience playing senior grade sport. We believe we are uniquely positioned to provide mentoring and role modeling in our health and lifestyle supports. We also believe in listening to the desires of our participants, and supporting their chosen lifestyle. Supports we offer include:

  • In the gym support. We recognise that some people want big muscles, while some people just want to be a bit healthier, and we tailor our approach accordingly.
  • Support identifying and navigating health and lifestyle programs in the community.
  • Support arranging and attending medical appointments.
  • Weekly programs which combine cooking and use of technology.
